Windows’ previous OS were vague about the length of time they can stay up in between boots. Windows XP is proud of its stamina. It can stay up for a long time. If you want to check on this, got to the Command Prompt. Click the Accessories menu from All Programs button. Type ’systeminfo’. This will make the computer list a number of useful information about the system that includes the uptime. Type ’systeminfo>info.txt’ to keep a record of these information. And you can look at it in the Notepad.
- In Windows XP, you have the option to Delete a file or files without dumping it to the Recycle Bin. Click the Start Menu, click Run, type in the box ‘gpedit.msc’, click User Configuration, click Administrative Templates, click Windows Components, click Windows Explorer and look for ‘ Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin’ setting. Click it. Gpedit offers lots of system options. Just be careful not to tweak the wrong buttons as this might lead to system crashes and failure.
- Lock your XP workstation by clicking the mouse twice. First, right click on your desktop, click create a new shortcut. Enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the empty field. Name the shortcut that you made with any name you want to call it. And voila, it’s done. When you want to lock your computer so nobody can access it without yoyur knowledge, double click on the shortcut. Your machine will be locked. Whats more, just press the Windows key + L, you get to lock it via keyboard shortcut.
