OPEN OFFICE: FOR THE BUDGET CONSTRAINED

There is a great way to still get you own computer even if you still do not have a budget to get your Office Software. What people usually overlook is that the hardware does not come with the software. And software, particularly Office Suites are quite expensive. However, this should not stop you for getting your own computer.There is such a thing called Open Office that is essentially full-feature office compatible software. What is even greater about Open Office is that you can get it for free. And although the interface is not accurately that of the Office Suite, it is a good alternative for the budget constrained.

Enabling NumLock Automatically

If you want the NumLock key to be enabled automatically for every user, click on the button Start, click on the word Run and then type the keyword Regedit. Go the following directory: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators. Once you are there, the value should be changed from 0 to 2. Enable NumLock manually. After this, you have to log off the computer and then log in again. You should do this procedure for all users of your computer. For this change to take effect, there is no need to restart your computer, as you are logging off a user account each time.

Fixing Winsock2

You will know that Winsock2 is damaged while releasing and renewing the IP address through IPCONFIG when you get a message saying that an error occurred during the renewal of the interface ‘Internet’ and that the operation was forced on something which is not a socket. What you should do is run the Regedit command and the registry keys Winsock and Winsock2 should be deleted under the directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. You need to download a specific reg file to do this. You are required to reboot your computer and after doing so, you should go to Network Connections. Right click on Properties and the click the button Install. Proceed to selecting Protocol and then clicking on the Add and Have Disk buttons. Go to the directory \Windows\inf and click on the Open and OK buttons. You should highlight Internet Protocol and click on OK. One last step is rebooting your computer and you are done.

Restoring Access to Network Connection

If you have been trying to connect to a computer running on a Windows XP operating system and are always getting an error message saying that access is denied although the user names and passwords are correct, you may have to do some slight registry edit. Click on the button Start and then click on the word Run. Type in the keyword Regedit. Open the following folders in chronological order: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control and then Lsa. The value of the restrictanonymous key should be changed from 0 to 1. Your computer should be rebooted for the change to take effect.

Reclaiming Folder Ownership

You may sometimes find that when you reinstall Windows XP, you will receive an error message telling you that access is denied if you try to open a previous directory of a user. There is a way to reclaim ownership of that folder. Log in with the account that has admin rights. Right click on the specific folder and select Properties. Go to the Security tab and click the button Advanced. Go to the Owner tab and click your name in the Names list. Click on the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Last step would be to click OK and Yes, and then you are done.

MAXIMIZE YOUR CD SPACE BY USING MULTI-SESSION BURNING

There are two types of blank CD available in the market, the recordable CD and the rewritable CD. The recordable CD is the less expensive of the two because it can only be used one time. On the other hand with the rewritable CD can be used over and over again. You can take out previously burned files, or add new ones, just like a regular storage file.With the use of the multi-session burning feature, even a recordable CD can be used several times. The only difference is with the recordable CD you can only add files and not delete them.

Faster Way to Rename Files in a Directory

If you have a number of files that are all in the same directory and you want to rename them, you do not have to do this individually. There is a better, faster and easier way to do it. Go to Windows Explorer and select the files that you want to rename. Right click or press F2 and select Rename. Next, type the prefix for the name of your choice. This then will automatically change the names of the rest of the files. Ensure that you also type the extension name if your Windows Explorer is configured to display them.

Right mouse click on your file and choose Properties, once you are inside, choose advance settings and tick the box of Encrypt file, and you are done.
